SOLAS new regulations starting 1st of July 2016

As of July 1st 2016, SOLAS regulations require that the verified gross mass (VGM) of sea containers must be made known to the carrier company before loading them onto the ship. Determining the weight of a container two methods could be used, weighing the complete packed container or weighing the individual items in the container and add the container’s tare weight.

Safety of container ships is the reason for the amendments to SOLAS. In prior incidents 25% of loaded containers was reported overweight.
